Many of these ships follow great cricle routs (as close as possible) between destinations in the northern hemisphere. This means they contribute quite a bit to the black carbon in the Arctic.<BR/><BR/>Big diesel truck engines in the U.S. are now equipped (or being equipped) with a rather efficient (in both senses) black carbon filter on the exhaust.
