Go. Look. I am not making this up.
Dozens of think tank cosponsors and hundreds of scientists will gather in an effort to “restore the scientific method” to its rightful place in the debate over the causes, consequences, and policy implications of climate change. So apparently science has been politicized, and the Heartland Institute is here to rescue us. (With economics, yet.) Priceless.
The theme of the conference, “Restoring the Scientific Method,” acknowledges the fact that claims of scientific certainty and predictions of climate catastrophes are based on “post-normal science,” which substitutes claims of consensus for the scientific method. This choice has had terrible consequences for science and society. Abandoning the scientific method led to the “Climategate” scandal and the errors and abuses of peer review by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
The scientists speaking at this conference, and the hundreds more who are expected to attend, are committed to restoring the scientific method. This means abandoning the failed hypothesis of man-made climate change, and using real science and sound economics to improve our understanding of the planet’s ever-changing climate.
Oh and also:
The event is open to the public. Federal and state elected officials can attend for free.Boy, oh boy, free tickets for elected officials! That's the way to keep politics out of science. Yupperoo. Yessireebob.
Apparently climate denial is over and has been replaced by a hilarious farce. I can't wait for this!

ReplyDeleteMy two pesos:
ReplyDeleteThe people who run the Liberty Institute of Delhi, a sponsor of the so called ICCC, are a bunch of ignorant, misleading, Ayn Rand loving nutters.
"Abandoning the scientific method led to the “Climategate” scandal and the errors and abuses of peer review by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)."
ReplyDeleteBlaming the victim as well I see... Nothing good can be said.
Kaustubh: thanks for reminding of an army friend, back in 1992, when UNFCCC was founded I had some of my first discussions with him on this matter.
ReplyDeleteWhat an impressive list of speakers! I'm sure they will be describing their latest groundbreaking research. As an elected church official, I wonder if I can get in for free?
ReplyDeleteThe Heartland announcement sounds like a post from Climate, Etc.
"restoring the scientific method. This means abandoning the failed hypothesis of man-made climate change"
ReplyDeleteNothing quite like prejudice, is there?
Even the mis-characterized, made-up version of climate science that exists within these people's deluded heads still isn't as silly as their real version.
ReplyDeleteOne of their sponsors is called
"Not by Fire but by Ice
THE NEXT ICE AGE - NOW!"
WTF is that? Are they promoting an ice age? Where's the money in that proposal? Oh yeah, anything but warming, I forgot.
My alternative policy institute is the "No, the Stupid Burns - Now!"
Judy must have had another engagement.
ReplyDeleteIt's quite disturbing that one of their links at the bottom leads here:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.climatewiki.org/wiki/Main_Page
I wonder how many people happen across this website and get misled.
It says "This page has been accessed 1,942 times" so maybe it is quite new?

ReplyDelete"Nothing quite like prejudice, is there?"
Waddya mean prejudice! It's all about clarity of purpose. No blithering or dithering at this assembly.
Straight talk only. None of that analysis=paralysis for us clear thinkers!
Another Heartland conference...
ReplyDeleteAfter tragedy and farce, what's left?

ReplyDeleteAfter tragedy and farce? The rapture!
ReplyDeleteOops, that's pretty much the same...
Throw in some free beer and pretzels and I'm there.
ReplyDeleteMt that was a hella funny joke, come on
ReplyDeleteOne recent denial-a-tribe comes from Senator Orrin Hatch
ReplyDelete"And I have seen no hard evidence supporting the calculation by the IPCC that it has greater than 90 percent confidence in its conclusion that humans are dramatically altering the climate." from a letter to a constituent by Senator Orrin Hatch

@shewonk: it's recursive, isn't it? First, tragedy and farce as tragedy, then tragedy and farce as farce, then...
ReplyDelete@rpauli: Notwithstanding his inability to understand actual scientific evidence, Hatch has one thing right: there is no evidence of the calculation that the IPCC has 90% confidence in [AGW, roughly speaking]. Because there was no such calculation. The subjective probability judgments of the IPCC are black-boxes, and their critics have some justification for their complaints.
This is not a trivial problem.
