Dr. William Briggs' take on it (I'm sure you know who he is).
I rode out a hurricane on a cruise ship back in the '80s. It was one of the top five or so experiences I've ever had. So, were I there, I might answer "yes."
That said, there have been fatalities.
Did Irene put out the Great Dismal Swamp peat fires?
Hartford's been getting buckets of rain on and off since 10:30AM Saturday. Just a warning shot. The fear is that if the power goes out, we'll lose the sump pump, and with that everything in the basement.
Dan Thompson --- Assume a fairly lengthy power failure once the winds pick up.
In the nonce, go acquire a gasolene powered pump or just a hand powered pump. Hook up right away and test it.
It is a climate change hurricane in being so unusually large. Jeff Masters has commented on Irene's size more than once.
No it is not a climate change huricane.
However as Govenor Christie mentioned on WNYC August was before the huricane a exceptionly wet month. It was so wet that it had set the record for rainfall for the month of August before Irene.

The attached chart shows the departure from normal rainfalls for the state.
The levels of percipitation for the month are not normal. What this means in terms of trends for rainfall I do not know. It is, as all the readers of this blog is aware, a bit of trouble to say that a particular event is unequivically due to global warming.
